Our featured speakers are a statistical anomaly. Sisters Eran Bermudez, Nadia Bermudez, and Judge Ruth Bermudez Montenegro each graduated from top law schools and undergraduate institutions with honors. These Latinas have become leaders in their respective legal communities and have become outstanding role models for other young Latinas. The Bermudez family arrived to El Centro, California by way of Mexicali, Baja California.

The youngest, Eran, graduated from UC Berkeley, Boalt Hall in 2005. Nadia graduated from Stanford Law School  in 2001 and Ruth graduated from UCLA School of Law in 1992. The eldest, Ruth, paved the way for her siblings  and she is now a Superior Court Judge in the Imperial County of California. Judge Montenegro was appointed by Governor Jerry Brown in 2012 and then was immediately challenged by an opponent. Judge Montenegro lost her seat but was quickly appointed a Superior Court Commissioner in 2013. She ran for an open seat, won, and earned her place back on the bench in 2014 – becoming only the third woman judge in the County. While in law school, Judge Montenegro was elected the first Latino/a Graduate Student President at UCLA. Nadia is Senior Counsel at Klinedinst PC in San Diego, California and is a past-president of San Diego La Raza Lawyers Association and past-president of  the local women’s bar, Lawyers Club of San Diego.

After 10 years of working at private sector firms representing public agencies and school districts, Eran has recently accepted a position with the University of California San Diego’s Office for the Prevention of Harassment and Discrimination. Eran is also a past-president of San Diego La Raza Lawyers Association and currently serves as President of its Scholarship Fund.

The Bermudez sisters were born and raised in the Imperial County. Their father Salvador Bermudez is a retired ironworker and their mother Elvia Bermudez is a homemaker.
